Taking care of and managing chicks in the first week is crucial as it determines their future growth and productivity. In particular, the weight of chicks at 7 days old is related to their weight at the time of release, and early exposure to sufficient feed and water within the first 24 hours of arrival at the farm is essential for successful rearing. When chicks come into contact with feed and water, it stimulates the movement of the digestive tract, allowing for complete absorption of the yolk sac within 5-7 days. The nutrients in the yolk sac are vital for maintaining body temperature, developing and maturing organs, including the immune system. Additionally, the antibodies passed through the yolk sac provide effective protection against diseases. If the yolk sac is not fully absorbed in the first few weeks, it can lead to yolk sac inflammation, increasing mortality rates and the cost of disease prevention. Furthermore, prolonged fasting in chicks can result in increased acid production in the stomach, causing gastric ulcers and damage to the stomach lining and glands.
